Bass Strait power cable back online

The Basslink power cable is back in operation after an outage caused by a problem at a converter station in Tasmania.

Tasmania is reconnected to the national energy grid after an outage to the undersea power cable linking the state to Victoria.

A problem at a converter station at George Town in Tasmania's north was fixed on Monday night, with the cable returning to operation at 9pm.

The Basslink cable, which runs across Bass Strait, went offline on Sunday morning.

"The issue relating to the electronics component at the George Town converter station was identified and resolved," Basslink said in a statement.

It has experienced several outages in recent years, including one of six months in 2015/16 which plunged Tasmania into an energy crisis and cost the state up to $250 million in alternate power and other costs.

The cable also went offline in March and April last year for more than two weeks due to damage during maintenance in Victoria.
