BBL bonanza soothes Fox ODI disappointment

Fox Cricket boss Matt Weiss admits broadcasting an ODI series in March is disappointing but there is plenty to like about the 2019-20 cricket schedule.

The prospect of having Australia's best cricketers available for almost a month of Big Bash League coupled with a few gestures in the 2019-20 schedule has soothed Fox Sports' disappointment about an ODI series being hosted in March.

Fox took sole custody of limited-overs broadcast rights as part of the six-year deal worth $1.18 billion that Cricket Australia (CA) announced in 2018.

Fox Cricket is expecting a ratings bonanza when they broadcast every World Cup game from May 30 but fans will then be starved of 50-over contests until Australia tour India in January.

Aaron Finch's team won't feature in an ODI at home until a trans-Tasman series starts on March 13, the latest finish to an international season in Australia outside World Cups since 1979.

"We'd much rather that series is in January ... we're disappointed but Cricket Australia has worked really closely with us on other parts of the schedule," Fox Cricket boss Matt Weiss told AAP.

"I think you'll find this is an anomaly and the flip side is Fox Cricket has the rights to those matches in India. I'm sure they'll do very well."

CA has made BBL player availability, one of many concerns previously raised by broadcasters and other stakeholders, a priority since India refused to budge on dates for the ODI tour.

The three-match series in India is expected to start soon after the SCG Test, with players overseas for a tick over a week.

Steve Smith, who will return to the Sydney Sixers, and other Australian superstars will then take part in the business end of the BBL.

"It will look better than last season ... you'll almost have the Australian ODI squad available for the last month of Big Bash," Weiss said.

"To have Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and these type of players available for that long plus the addition of some international stars ... we're set for a bumper Big Bash.

"The best players in the world are playing IPL now. If we can replicate that, there's no reason why the Big Bash can't be the biggest T20 tournament in the world."

AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Andre Russell are among the foreign stars being targeted by BBL franchises.

Scheduling two ODIs at the SCG, on March 13 and 15, rather than shifting one to another city was partly driven by venue availability but also acknowledges Fox's challenge in a busy month.

The WACA was an option but the tight turnaround coupled with Fox having its hands full with AFL, AFLW, NRL, A-League, Super Rugby and V8 Supercars meant Sydney snapped up two of the season's three ODIs.

Weiss praised CA for convincing Pakistan to agree to a day-night Test in Adelaide and tweaking Perth's day-night Test so stumps are pulled before midnight on the east coast.
