A grand piano has mysteriously appeared on a sandbar in the middle of Miami's Biscayne Bay.

The origin of the hefty 300kg instrument and how it came to be there remain unknown, with local authorities amused but unconcerned about the bizarre incident.

The Miami Herald reported that the piano had ended up on the sandbar in an elaborate New Year's Eve prank.

It had originally been a prop in a film, the newspaper's website said, but had ended up in a garage.

A local teenager had planned to use the piano in a video as a college entrance application, but his friends pressured him into burning it during a New Year's Eve party.

According to the website, the piano ended up on the sandbar via the teenager's family yacht.

"There is nothing to do, since there is not any danger or threat," Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said. "There may be birds that might decide to go to perch on the piano. Why not?"

Locals were delighted by appearance of the piano, which remains solidly steadfast in the sandbar and shows no signs of moving any time soon.
