"Beast Mode" is back, with running back Marshawn Lynch inking a new NFL contract on Friday that will keep him with the Seattle Seahawks through to 2017.

The team confirmed the widely reported signing in an article posted on its website.

Lynch, who had been entering the final year of his contract, will turn 29 before the 2015 campaign kicks off.

Since the Seahawks' hopes of a Super Bowl repeat were dashed in February by the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 49, Lynch had been said to be mulling retirement.

He was originally scheduled to make $US7 million ($A9 million) in 2015, but - under the re-worked extension - he will reportedly be paid $US12 million ($A15.5 million).

Lynch, arguably the best running back in the league, is a crucial part of the Seattle offence. He ran for 1306 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season in 2014 and added another 367 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

In the post-season, he picked up 381 total yards.

Lynch, whose explosive running style earned him the "Beast Mode" nickname, has rushed for 1200 yards in each of his past four seasons in Seattle.

The Seahawks have long been supportive of Lynch's famed reluctance to speak to the media - a task the NFL demands of its players.

But there was controversy surrounding coaches' failure to give him the ball when it was with the Seahawks at the goalline in the waning seconds of the Super Bowl.

Instead, the Patriots sealed the win with an interception of a pass by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
