The United States has called on Australia and other nations involved in the fight against Islamic State to step up efforts.

US Vice-President Joe Biden met with Australia's ambassador to the US Kim Beazley and representatives of most of 65 nations involved in the coalition at the State Department in Washington on Monday.

Mr Biden told the ambassadors the coalition needed to intensify its efforts against IS, known also as ISIL, a White House spokesman said.

That included increasing airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, helping Syria's neighbours defend their borders and increasing information sharing and intelligence co-operation to counter foreign fighters and help prevent attacks.

The coalition also needed to better support the Iraqi government to train its army and police and boost humanitarian support for the people of Syria and Iraq.

Australia is one of nine nations conducting air strikes in Iraq and a different group of nine involved in bombing Syrian targets.

It is also training Iraqi troops in Taji.
