Becker drops diplomatic immunity claim

Ex-tennis champion Boris Becker has dropped his claim to have diplomatic immunity from bankruptcy.

Former tennis star Boris Becker has ended a challenge to bankruptcy proceedings after dropping his claim to diplomatic immunity.

Becker was not represented at Monday's insolvency hearing in London, but lawyers for the trustees of his estate said he was no longer claiming diplomatic immunity.

In June, Becker said he had a claim to diplomatic immunity as a sports attache for the Central African Republic (CAR), which had caused the postponement of an auction of personal memorabilia, including his trophies, to raise money for creditors.

The suspended sale is now expected to proceed.

The 51-year-old German-born star was declared bankrupt in June 2017 for a debt claimed by private bankers Arbuthnot Latham.

Auctioneers Wyles Hardy & Co said they had postponed the auction following "concerns that the potential realisations from the auction may be compromised by the uncertainty caused by speculation" about Becker's bankruptcy and status.

Becker's bankruptcy term had been scheduled to end earlier this year, but it was extended by Britain's High Court pending a decision on his claim to diplomatic immunity.

CAR officials had given conflicting statements regarding Becker's status.

Sports Minister Sylvain Ngarso told dpa in June that the country had no record of his appointment as a sports ambassador, while the country's ambassador to the EU and Belgium, Daniel Emery Dede, said Becker did have diplomatic immunity.
