The world's most photogenic footballer, David Beckham, sent the media throng into a snapping frenzy when he planted a kiss on a young fan.

As far as first kisses go, Allegra Fewson-Ward's was out of this world.

The 19-month-old was the object of LA Galaxy star David Beckham's affection during his visit to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital on Monday.

The world's most photogenic footballer sent the media throng into a snapping frenzy when he planted a kiss on Allegra's cheek.

And while meeting celebrities is low on the to-do of a child suffering from a bone infection, Allegra's mum Jackie Fewson said the visit was a welcome distraction.

"I hope it helps with her healing, maybe he's got the healing kiss," said Jackie, who also scored a kiss on the cheek from Beckham.

"I don't think she'll remember but certainly we'll keep reminding her of it."

Beckham drew cheers from children and parents as he strode into the neuroscience ward, in a plain t-shirt and jeans rather than the tracksuit of the team he is expected to leave later this month.

He spent close to an hour chatting and posing with the 20 sick children. And he seemed to enjoy it.

The 36-year-old's appeal didn't stop with the patients, as doctors, one dressed in a Beckham England jersey, joined the queue for autographs.

Beckham is the second big name to visit the new $1 billion hospital in Parkville after Queen Elizabeth cut the ribbon in October. Patients moved from the old building next door last week.

Beckham is in Melbourne for a friendly match between the Galaxy and Melbourne Victory on Tuesday.
