Ben Simmons has undergone a further procedure on his right foot as the Australian No.1 draft pick tries to make it back to the practice court.

Simmons, who hasn't played a game in his first year as a member of an NBA roster had bone marrow injected into his foot to stimulate bone growth and speed up the healing process.

Simmons is expected to resume training later this week.

With Simmons out and Nerlens Noel traded to Dallas the Sixers were already struggling for the season and are now without centre Joel Embiid indefinitely due to a left knee injury.

Embiid is experienced swelling and soreness following recent training sessions.

Embiid, the No. 3 overall pick in 2014, missed his first two seasons while recovering from foot surgery.
