The millennium development goals expire at the end of 2015, but what have they achieved?

SUCCESS OF THE UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

* More than 1 billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty since 1990.

* The primary school net enrolment rate in the developing regions has reached an estimated 91 per cent in 2015, up from 83 per cent in 2000.

* Two-thirds of countries in the developing regions have achieved gender parity in primary education.

* The global under-five mortality rate has declined by more than half, dropping from 90 to 43 deaths per 1000 live births between 1990 and 2015.

* Since 1990, the maternal mortality ratio has been cut nearly in half and most of the reduction has occurred since 2000.

* New HIV infections fell by 40 per cent between 2000 and 2013, from an estimated 3.5 million cases to 2.1 million.

* In 2015, 91 per cent of the global population uses an improved drinking water source, compared to 76 per cent in 1990.

* Aid from developed countries increased by 66 per cent in real terms between 2000 and 2014.
