Bennett tinkers with Bunnies' lethal left

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett looks set to switch Greg Inglis to the right side, breaking up the most potent left edge in the NRL.

Braidon Burns appears set to be shoe-horned into the Rabbitohs left centre spot, with Inglis switching sides to form a right-side combination with Queensland Origin teammate Dane Gagai for Friday's blockbuster round one clash with the Sydney Roosters.

Inglis' move to the right will set up a lip-smacking head-to-head showdown between the Queensland and Australian champion and Roosters ace Latrell Mitchell, the man considered his heir apparent.

However it will also break up the Rabbitohs' left-side combination which proved so lethal in 2018.

Last year, the Rabbitohs' left edge, of Inglis, John Sutton, Cody Walker and now-departed winger Robert Jennings, scored 48 of the team's 104 tries.

Comparatively, the right side scored just 27.

As well, their left edge put on more tries than any edge combination at any opposition club in the competition.

While it shapes as a big gamble for Bennett, who is set to take charge of the side for the first time on Friday night at the SCG, Burns was licking his lips at the opportunity to link with Sutton and Walker.

"I believe Cody is the most underrated player in the NRL," Burns said.

"To play outside him, I'm really looking forward to it if I get that chance."

Burns and Inglis have been switching sides during pre-season, and the 22-year-old Burns played his cards close to his chest on Tuesday as to where exactly he will line up.

Burns, who played just five games last year, has won the race for a centre spot with young gun Corey Allan named on the bench.

Campbell Graham has won the other wing spot while Alex Johnston goes to fullback, but will likely move into the three-quarter line when Inglis returns to full fitness and shifts to the No.1.

"Cody and Sutton have been playing on that edge for a while now," Burns said.

"They're pretty comfortable and to get on the outside of them, they just tell us what to do. Whoever goes on that edge is going to be pretty comfortable."
