Bennett urges Broncos board to make call

Wayne Bennett has called on the Brisbane board to end speculation and decide if his time as NRL coach of the Broncos is coming to a close.

Wayne Bennett has demanded the Brisbane board decide his future after admitting it "remains to be seen" whether he stays on as Broncos coach.

Bennett - off contract next year - dug his heels in on Wednesday after a News Corp report claimed the long-time Broncos mentor was a "dead man walking" at the NRL club.

The report said the board had rejected foundation coach Bennett's pitch to stay on in 2020 and were looking at other options including South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold.

Coaching rumours have refused to go away since Brisbane missed out on their main target - Melbourne's Craig Bellamy.

And more speculation it seems is the last thing Bennett needs before Thursday's NRL clash with Cronulla as seventh-placed Brisbane look to secure a top-four finish.

Bennett, 68, took a swipe at the Broncos board after revealing he had not received any feedback since tabling a proposal last month that is believed to have asked for an extension.

Bennett said unlike board members he was tired of "facing the music" each week and wanted rumours about the Broncos coaching future to end.

"From a personal point of view I do (hope to get a board response) because it is compulsory for me to come here and I have to answer these questions all the time," he said.

"They (board) have don't have to come to meetings. They can avoid them or make no comment - I am the one facing the music.

"Personally I wish the speculation wasn't here and it would all go away but it won't go away until we make a decision here.

"I understand that. I am not sure if everyone else (at Broncos) does."

Asked if he would be coaching at Brisbane in 2020, Bennett said: "It remains to be seen".

When pressed on his future Bennett threw it back into the board's court.

"I can't do (answer) that. You will have to talk to the chairman or CEO," he said.

"If they don't want to talk about it I am not certainly going to talk about it.

"I am not in a position where I can elaborate on my future. It's someone else's call."

The News Corp report suggested winning the 2018 premiership was Bennett's only hope of staying on.

"I don't know what will save me," he said.

"I don't know if I will be here or not.

"I am just getting on with coaching.

"I am not going to stand here and sell myself to anyone."

Meanwhile, Brisbane back-rower Jaydn Su'A has re-signed for another two seasons.

STATS THAT MATTER

* Brisbane have won four of their past five matches against Cronulla.

* Brisbane have the second best completion rate in the NRL (78.7 per cent) and make the least errors (nine per game).

* Cronulla are ranked third for fewest tries conceded (2.8 per game), linebreaks conceded (3.6pg) and missed tackles (23.3pg).
