Senator Cory Bernardi has reportedly resigned as Tony Abbott's Shadow Parliamentary Secretary after suggesting same-sex marriage could lead to demands to legalise bestiality.
During a senate debate on Tuesday, Senator Bernardi suggested legalising same-sex marriage could lead to demands to legalise polygamy and bestiality.
Mr Turnbull, a former opposition leader, said the senator's comments were "the worst sort of slippery slope argument".
"It's hysterical, it's alarmist, it's offensive and it does not represent the mainstream view of Australian people, let alone the Liberal party," he told Sky News on Wednesday.
"I totally dissociate myself from those remarks."
Labor earlier called on Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to sack Senator Bernardi from his role as a parliamentary secretary over the comments, which have outraged gay rights groups.
Coalition MPs and senators have also lined up to distance themselves from his remarks.
