Bert Newton's wife Patti says her husband is recovering at home after two days in hospital with a chest infection.

The TV veteran's family and management are downplaying the episode after initial reports he had a serious bout of pneumonia.

"It's all been a media beat up and he wasn't rushed to hospital today. He literally is there for a standard check up," Jackie Booler, a spokeswoman for Newton's management ATA Allstar Artists told AAP.

"They were worried it could turn into it (pneumonia). Today was just a routine check," she said.

Patti told the Herald Sun that doctors suspected he had pneumonia and admitted him to hospital where he was put on a drip and given antibiotics.

In 2011, Newton was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and the following year he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery.

According to Patti, the 78-year-old is recovering at home.

"I think with his age and having a quadruple bypass, they are always very cautious," she told the Herald Sun.
