Beth Mooney pushes case for Ashes recall

Dropped opener Beth Mooney has struck a century for Australia against an ACT XI, just a week out from the women's Ashes Test on the first day of tour matches.

Beth Mooney has pushed her case for an Australian women's Ashes recall with an unbeaten century in the last warm-up match before next week's Test.

Mooney hit a controlled 118 against an ACT invitational XI, which also included Test hopefuls Tahlia McGrath and Belinda Vakarewa as opening bowlers on Friday's opening day of the three-day match.

Mooney was dropped from Australia's one-day side for the first leg of the Ashes, as wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy moved to the top of the order.

However, with Healy back at No.7, the 23-year-old Mooney struck 16 boundaries and one six in her 171-ball knock before she was retired by the Aussie team at Manuka Oval.

Australian coach Matt Mott has already indicated Healy will likely drop down the order for the one-off Test, potentially opening the door for Mooney's return as Australia look to wrap up the urn with a win.

In Australia's first match with a pink ball, allrounder Ellyse Perry scored 58 as the lights took effect. The Aussies lost 5-49 before declaring at 8-272.

Perry then took 2-17 to leave the ACT XI struggling at 4-71 at the close.

Meanwhile, England also had their struggles with the bat in their pink-ball warm-up match at Blacktown in Sydney ahead of next week's first women's day-night Test.

While the swinging ball has traditionally done damage under lights, the Cricket Australia XI spinners ran through England's lower order before the dinner break to have them all out for 231.

England's quicks then made the new ball swing early to have the inexperienced hosts 4-82 at stumps.
