A new film set within Australia's Italian community is set for its national release this week.

Touted as a comedy about life, love and lasagne -- the jokes and characters in Big Mamma's Boy may seem a little too familiar.

The film tells the story of Rocky -- a successful 35 year old businessman -- who still lives with his overbearing Italian mother. But when he meets the girl of his dreams -- he finally tries to move out -- much to his mamma's dismay.

Big Mamma's Boy features a generous serve of stereotypical characters and gags that have been circulating on Australian stage and screen for decades.

But its makers insist the film does go beyond the stereotype.
