Biaggi seriously hurt in motorbike crash

Former Superbike World Champion Max Biaggi has been badly injured in a crash during practice for a Supermoto race near Rome, Italian media reported.

Massimiliano 'Max' Biaggi, a retired World Superbike champion from Italy, has been seriously injured in a Supermoto motorbike accident, Italian media reports said Friday.

Biaggi had a crash while practising at the Sagittario circuit in Latina, about 60 kilometres south of Rome, the ANSA news agency and the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper said.

The 45-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in Rome via helicopter.

ANSA said he did not lose consciousness, while Gazzetta indicated that he was badly injured but not in life-threatening condition.He is understood to have complained of rib damage.

Biaggi won the Superbike title in 2010 and 2012, the year he retired from racing.

He previously won four 250cc World Championship titles between 1994 and 1997 and was a runner-up in the 500cc and MotoGP categories.
