A nine-metre humpback whale has become entangled in fishing lines off South Australia's southeast coast with authorities launching a rescue bid.

Environment officials say the young whale has become entangled in fishing lines, ropes and floats near Port MacDonnell.

It was last spotted on Wednesday afternoon heading east and appeared fatigued, spokeswoman Deb Kelly said.
