The Business Council of Australia has called for the elimination of many, if not most, of the 50 different taxes imposed on Australian businesses,

The Australian newspaper reports Business Council president Graham Bradley has called for the federal government to lift national productivity with genuine limits on spending and pursuit of reform, including tax reform.

He's also questioned if some parts of the government's stimulus package need to continue.

Mr Bradley says most of the 50 different taxes imposed on business are imposed by state governments, which he says are inefficient and contribute only one-tenth of the tax system.

The Australian says the BCA, which represents the nation's 100 biggest firms, has also warned Prime Minister Kevin Rudd not to move ahead of the international community on climate change.
