Big Show dials it down for ODI return

Recalled to Australia's ODI squad, Glenn Maxwell says he's adopted a more measured approach to his cricket and promised not to throw his wicket away.

Glenn Maxwell has declared he's dimmed the lights on The Big Show and he's desperate to break back into the Test arena.

The big-hitting allrounder describes himself as being older, wiser and more patient after receiving a wake up call in the form of his axing for Australia's one-day tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa earlier this year.

After being recalled into Australia's 50-over side for the three-game series against New Zealand, starting in Sydney on Sunday, he says he's evolved from the often-maligned and inconsistent image he has carved for himself.

An explosive batsman long touted as an aspiring Test regular, he has in the past been accused of not valuing his wicket.

When he was dropped from the limited overs squad, which he has been a stalwart of since his debut in 2012, he used his time to go back to Victoria and work on his defensive deficiencies.

"I changed a few things slightly technically and slightly mentally as well," Maxwell said.

"Moreso the way I look at the game and the way I start my innings and I think that's going to be a big change heading into this innings and make sure I get into the game, not throw it away too early."

Maxwell has yet to convert his form in Sheffield Shield with Victoria into a regular place in the Australian Test squad.

His three of his Test match appearances have been overseas, against India and Pakistan.

One of four allrounders in the Australian squad for the three-game series against the Black Caps, Maxwell is hoping to use it as an audition for next year's Test tour of India, where his right-arm offspin will be valued.

The 28-year-old was mentioned as a possible inclusion in the Australian side for the Adelaide Test against South Africa, however was passed over as Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson made their debuts in the middle order.

His cause wasn't helped when he was dropped by the Bushrangers for their Shield clash with Tasmania earlier in the season and his non-selection for the Adelaide Test gave him a point to prove.

"I thought I might have been a chance (for Adelaide), the way I batted in my first game back at the MCG against the reverse-swinging ball against Queensland. I thought that was a really good sign of the improvements I've made in my defence, technique and the way I leave the ball," Maxwell said.

"I know one score doesn't show it enough but I thought with a good record backing it up as well. To not get picked was a little bit disappointing but there's plenty of Tests on the radar."
