Big weekend ahead for sports lovers

Get the television remotes ready, there is a feast of sport on this weekend for those who prefer to stay indoors.

YOUR SPORTS LOVERS' GUIDE FOR THE WEEKEND:

FRIDAY

1800 - Get home from work and get comfy on the lounge as Penrith host Newcastle in the NRL.

1945 - Organise some food because the footy is about to kick into gear with struggling Super Rugby franchises Melbourne Rebels and NSW Waratahs, with one win between them this season, doing battle.

1950 - If the rugby doesn't excite, it won't be long before the A-League and NRL kick-off, though the pick is probably the AFL where Collingwood take on defending premiers Western Bulldogs.

2130 - Fancy a quick switch to the equine world, who will win the Group One William Reid Stakes over 1200m at Mooney Valley?

2300 - Time for some shut eye ... get ready for an early start to a big weekend.

SATURDAY

0500 - The WGC Match Play in Austin, Texas - how will Aussie golfer Marc Leishman go on the third day?

0630 - Golf not good enough to get you out of bed? Switch to the soccer where Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale leads Wales into battle against Ireland in a pivotal World Cup qualifier.

0900 - But if you're after a slower start to your Saturday, take in the first ball of the third cricket Test between New Zealand and South Africa in Hamilton - the tourists lead the three-match series 1-0.

1400 - It's a big day in the AFL with the inaugural AFL women's grand final between Brisbane and Adelaide on the Gold Coast.

1500 - Probably the pick of the weekend, it's the fourth Test between India and Australia from Dharamsala, with the series tied 1-1. Will skippers Virat Kohli and Steve Smith go at each other's throats again?

1530 - If the pressure is too much, watch the Group One The BMW over 2400 metres where a small, but top-quality field vie for honours at Rosehill Gardens, Sydney.

1610 - The pace then hots up in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 2000m, also at Rosehill.

1635 - Back to Melbourne with two games of AFL kicking off - including title challengers Sydney up against Port Adelaide. Manly also host Canterbury in the NRL.

1700 - Then rev things up with final qualifying for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix from Albert Park.

1930 - Quick score check in the cricket and it's time to get that remote handy. Super Rugby, AFL (including the return of a full-strength Essendon against Hawthorn), NRL, A-League .... it's all happening. But the tightest affair could be in Super Netball, where the unbeaten Giants take on the Melbourne Vixens in a top-of-the-table clash.

2100 - Queenslanders, it's time to rejoice, with all-sunshine state affairs in the AFL and NRL for some late-night viewing.

2300 - If you haven't had enough by now, there's Super Rugby from across the globe throughout the night, but it's probably time to get some sleep.

SUNDAY

1300 - It's a lazy start to your Sunday, before North Melbourne gets things going against West Coast just after lunch in the AFL.

1300 - Need something with a bit more pep? How about round two of the Supercars from Melbourne Park.

1500 - It's time for day two of the cricket from India, while it's also time for the AFL blockbuster between Adelaide and pre-season title favourites GWS.

1600 - Strap yourself in for the Australian F1 GP, but don't forget to keep an eye on the cricket and Wests Tigers' first NRL game under interim coach Andrew Webster when they host Melbourne.

1800 - It's time to start winding things down with Sunday twilight football. In the NRL it's St George Illawarra against the Warriors, who could unveil Keiran Foran for the first time.

1900 - Sydney could wrap up the A-League title when they take on Perth Glory, while down the road Fremantle close out round one of the AFL against Geelong.

2200 - But before you get up from your seat, don't forget a quick stumps update from the cricket in India ... and that should see you right for the week ahead.
