Budget day is a big day for federal MPs, but for Bill Shorten it's extra special - it's his 48th birthday.
The opposition leader's colleagues have surprised him with a cake during a Labor caucus meeting after a rousing pre-budget pep talk.
"Oh no, there's some more bad news coming," Mr Shorten joked before MPs and senators sang happy birthday.
