Billy Slater ready for NZ Test if required

Melbourne fullback Billy Slater says he'd be up to playing in the rugby league Test against New Zealand if he is needed.

Melbourne fullback Billy Slater says he'd be ready to run out for the Kangaroos should he get a call-up for Australia's rugby league Test match against New Zealand in Canberra next month.

Slater is only three games into a comeback following a second round of shoulder surgery that sidelined him during the 2016 season.

He has impressed in the unbeaten Storm's charge to the top of the NRL ladder.

Due to injury, the 33-year-old hasn't worn the Kangaroos jersey since 2014, with Brisbane's Darius Boyd the incumbent Test fullback.

Australia coach Mal Meninga said he was likely to stick with Boyd, who delivered a match-winning performance in the Four Nations final.

But Slater felt he was up to representative standard if required.

"I feel I'm at the level but I'd like to play a few more games ... and at the end of the day it's not my decision," Slater said on Wednesday.

"I'm happy with where my shoulder's at and where my game's heading.

"I'm still building and getting that match fitness as I haven't played too much footy in two years but that's coming back slowly."
