New transparent garbage bins will be installed at Sydney's major train stations, the NSW government has announced.
Transport Minister John Robertson insists the bins, at stations including Wynyard, Central and Town Hall, won't compromise on safety, AAP reports.
The first of almost 200 bins are returning to stations on Monday.
Authorities, which saw that bins were removed following concern over possible terror attacks have recently come under criiticism for 'filthy' stations.
"This is great news for commuters who have been crying out for bins to make a comeback on stations," Mr Robertson said in a statement.
"They have a range of safety features including a transparent exterior so that police can quickly and easily identify the contents.
"The first stations set to try out the new bins will be Epping, Blacktown, Strathfield, Liverpool, Parramatta and Chatswood, as well as all stations on the City Circle Line.
"The new bins are sleek, safe and convenient for commuters and they will help clean up our trains and stations."
Regular recycling bins were reintroduced on more than 100 smaller train stations earlier this year.
"The government committed to begin reintroducing bins at some of our busiest stations by the end of this year and we are now delivering on that promise," Mr Robertson said.
"The bins will initially be installed in station concourse areas but we are looking at the potential to reintroduce bins on platforms down the track.
"Safety is our number one priority and these bins will enable us to improve the experience for customers, without compromising on safety."
Bins will be installed at 28 of the network's busiest stations by the middle of next year.
