Former Test paceman Jackson Bird has praised Tasmania's rookie quicks for helping deliver an important Sheffield Shield win over South Australia.

Bird (4-65) was the linchpin in the shadow of stumps on day four in Hobart as the Tigers overcame rain and a Callum Ferguson century to register a 189-run win.

Set a mammoth 403 for victory, the Redbacks were bowled out for 213.

Players were forced from the field for almost two hours in Friday's third session with SA teetering at 7-192.

Once the rain stopped, Bird had Nick Winter (26) edging before trapping Ferguson plumb for 111.

Paceman Gabe Bell (3-44) claimed the final wicket to complete the win, giving him seven scalps for the match.

Bell, aged 23, has 20 Shield wickets this season at 19.50.

"He's the perfect bowler to have at the other end," Bird said after the win that keeps the Tigers in touch with second place.

"Something's always happening when he comes on. It's great to have a young Tasmanian guy coming through and playing as well as he is."

Debutant paceman Alex Pyecroft took three first-innings wickets, hit a valuable 29 and went for less than a run-an-over in the second innings.

"I was the lucky one to get the wickets but the pressure we created in the two sessions before that, we got the rewards at the end of the day," Bird said.

Ferguson almost single-handedly saved the match for SA, bringing up his 18th first-class ton with a straight drive.

Test incumbent Travis Head scored 49 and 11 in his final match before joining the Australian squad for the first Test against India.

The Redbacks were rolled for just 136 in their first innings, in reply to Tasmania's 185.

The Tigers got further ahead by posting 8-353(dec) headlined by a patient 113 from Jordan Silk and runs to veteran George Bailey.

Bailey hit 63 after last week handing the Shield captaincy to Matthew Wade to focus on fixing his ailing batting.

SA are last without a win from five matches.
