Fringe Test paceman Jackson Bird is expected to play for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield game against South Australia.

Bird is likely to feature from only the second day of the Adelaide Oval fixture which starts Thursday.

South Australian quick Chadd Sayers is expected to remain with the Australia's Ashes squad and be 12th man for the first Test against England, also starting Thursday.

But Redbacks coach Jamie Siddons believes Bird will be released to play for the Tigers.

"He is coming back tomorrow or the next day and come into this game, and Chadd will stay there as 12th man," Siddons told reporters on Wednesday.

The third-placed Redbacks will host winless Tasmania who will be without surprise Test selection Tim Paine.

He got the Australian nod ahead of fellow Tasmanian gloveman Matthew Wade, NSW's Peter Nevill and SA keeper Alex Carey.

"If they (Australian selectors) want to go forward I would have gone with Carey," Siddons said.

"But I'm really happy with the Tim Paine selection, I think he is a really good keeper and a good person to have around the team, very experienced."

Tasmania allrounder James Faulkner has been ruled of the game because of a rib injury suffered at training earlier this week.

The Redbacks have replaced Sayers with allrounder Cameron Valente.

South Australia: Travis Head (capt), Callum Ferguson, Alex Carey, Tom Cooper, John Dalton, Jake Lehmann, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Jake Weatherald, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa, Cameron Valente.

Tasmania: George Bailey (capt), Gabe Bell, Alex Doolan, Jake Doran, Simon Milenko, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Sam Rainbird, Tom Rogers, Jordan Silk, Matthew Wade, Beau Webster, Jackson Bird.
