Bishop and Payne in US for defence talks

Australia's foreign and defence ministers are in the US for top-level ministerial talks hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and new Defence Minister Marise Payne will miss parliament this week to attend defence talks in the US.

They are in Boston for the Australia-US ministerial consultations hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

Ms Bishop says she and Senator Payne will discuss the approach to combating Daesh, or Islamic State, in Iraq and Syria and new areas of co-operation between the two allies.
