Bishop, Blicavs miss final Opals camp

Abby Bishop and Sara Blicavs have been cut from the Opals Olympic squad ahead of the final camp, but could still be picked if unexpected injuries arise.

Abby Bishop and Sara Blicavs have missed out on a spot in the Australian women's Olympic basketball squad ahead of their final camp before Rio.

The pair, both coming back from injuries, attended the Opals' penultimate gathering in Canberra but were left out of the 15-player group for next week's trip to the Gold Coast.

Bishop returned to Australia following a short stint at WNBA's Seattle Storm in the hope of making the team, just a couple of months after being diagnosed with life-threatening blood clots.

Blicavs, meanwhile, hurt her foot at the Opals' first camp in April and missed their subsequent tours of Japan and Europe.

Coach Brendan Joyce said it was a tough decision to make but that there was still a chance they could be picked if unexpected injuries arose between now and August.

"I want to personally thank them for their contribution that they have made to the team throughout the selection process," Joyce said in a statement on Wednesday.

The final team of 12 will be named following the camp from July 5-11.

They will then fly to the USA for a warm-up tour against Canada, France and the world No.1 Americans at Madison Square Garden.

"It is always important to have tough games before a tournament and these games will provide tremendous preparation for August," Joyce said.
