Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop will cut short a visit to Thailand and the Philippines to be in parliament next week as her party prepares for a likely showdown on same-sex marriage.

The foreign minister will attend various economic and security meetings in the region before returning to Canberra for parliament's sitting next Tuesday.

Ms Bishop had booked leave for the Tuesday in case she was unable to be back in time.

However, after confirming she was able to fulfil all her commitments and return to Canberra on Tuesday, it is understood the minister cancelled that leave, with her trip shortened by hours rather than days.

Ms Bishop will be back in time for a Liberal partyroom debate over same-sex marriage as senators and MPs return from their long winter break.
