Foreign Minister Julie Bishop insists diplomats have made some progress on resolving the Syrian humanitarian crisis and plans for a permanent ceasefire and political solution.

Ms Bishop is taking part in Australia's first International Syria Support Group meeting on Tuesday in Vienna co-chaired by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"This meeting has been worthwhile," Ms Bishop told the Nine Network, but added there was still a long way to go.
