Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will share some insights on counter-terrorism garnered from her recent travels in south-east Asia when she heads to Washington DC for talks on defeating Islamic State militants.

Ms Bishop will travel to the US on Tuesday for a foreign ministers meeting hosted by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Sixty-eight countries involved in a US-led coalition in the Middle East will be represented at the talks.

Ms Bishop will also attend a smaller meeting of foreign ministers from countries making significant contributions.

Australia has 780 defence personnel in Iraq and Syria, carrying out air strikes, special operations, and training Iraqi soldiers and police in the fight against IS.

As the fight for west Mosul heats up, Ms Bishop told parliament on Monday the coalition was at a "pivotal point".

Stopping the flow of foreign fighter terrorists in and out of Syria and Iraq and terrorism financing were major focuses.

Ms Bishop last week met her counterparts from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

"The Australian government is deeply concerned about the links between ISIS in Syria and Iraq and south-east Asia," she said.

Australia had provided a package of counter-terrorism support to the Philippines and was stepping up intelligence-sharing with countries across south-east Asia, Ms Bishop said.

There are huge concerns about terrorism ties with IS in the southern Philippines region, especially around Mindanao.

An estimated 500 Indonesians have joined IS in the Middle East.
