Bishop off to UK and Ireland

Fresh from talks at the White House, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is now turning her attention to the United Kingdom.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will take a detour to the UK and Ireland on her way back to Australia after talks at the White House.

Ms Bishop will visit Britain and Ireland on Thursday and Friday.

In London, she will meet Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to discuss the Brexit fallout and the appetite for an Australia-UK free trade deal.

Terrorism and the fight against Islamic State militants in the Middle East will also be on the agenda.

She's due to meet Irish Foreign Minister Charles Flanagan in Dublin to discuss economic, political and security developments in Europe.

Ms Bishop this week became the first Australian minister to visit the Trump White House where she held talks with Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
