Bishop warns stay alert for terror

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says all countries need to be alert regarding terrorist attacks, as German police investigate a soccer match threat.

A foiled terrorist attack in Germany shows the need to be vigilant and work closely with other countries' intelligence agencies, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

A soccer game between Germany and Netherlands which German Chancellor Angel Merkel was due to attend in Hanover was called off two hours before its start on Tuesday over fears of a planned bombing.

Police received what they called "specific indications" an attack involving explosives was planned.

The match was due to be played just four days after suicide bombers targeted the Paris soccer stadium where Germany were playing France.

German police have so far found no explosives or made any arrests, despite media reports to the contrary.

Ms Bishop told Sky News it was "deeply concerning" but such events should not stop people going about their everyday lives.

"We should not allow the threat of terrorism to strike fear and intimidation into the hearts of people," she said.

It also underscored the need for strong co-operation with overseas intelligence agencies.

"We are exceedingly prepared for any potential attack," Ms Bishop said.
