Bizarre dismissal sinks Maxwell at MCG

Victorian batsman Glenn Maxwell has been dismissed in bizarre fashion in their Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia at the MCG.

File it under 'It could only happen to Glenn Maxwell'.

The mercurial Victorian batsman capable of stunningly inventive strokes and head-scratching bloopers - often in the same over - added another entry to his nothing-if-not-entertaining scrapbook on Friday.

Elevated in Victoria's batting order to No.4 for their Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia, Maxwell put together an impressive innings at the MCG while looking to build a case for a Test recall.

But disaster struck when he was on 57 and it happened as he was minding his own business at the non-striker's end.

Opener Nic Maddinson blasted a sharp return chance at Matthew Kelly after lunch when on 92.

In a bizarre turn of events, the WA seamer failed to complete the catch but the ball took a big deflection off his right hand to nip behind his back onto the stumps with Maxwell out of his crease.

Having missed the opportunity to remove Maddinson, the Warriors gleefully appealed and Maxwell was on his way.

The 30-year-old was left to watch scoreboard replays in disbelief as he trudged off.

Maddinson went on to make an unbeaten century on his Shield debut for the Vics, while the desperately unlucky Maxwell was left to ponder what might have been.

"I was just happy he dropped it," Maddinson said with a wry smile.

"We were just laughing about it ... I keep telling everyone that backing up is overrated.

"Maxy's fine but obviously it was disappointing for him to get out like that.

"He'd done the hard yards in getting through a couple of tough spells and some pretty disciplined bowling but those things happen."

In just his second Shield match of the season, an eighth first-class century would have given Maxwell's chances of a Test recall a timely boost.

He made a duck and 35 in his first Shield game last week after a string of T20 and ODI appearances to start the Australian summer.
