Black Caps stare at massive salvage job

New Zealand remain defiant but Australia reckon they can make the second Test theirs if they claim one more scalp - Kane Williamson's.

The Black Caps will start day four on 4-121 at Hagley Oval, still 14 runs behind and with tailenders making up the majority of their remaining batsmen.

Two things in their favour are a pitch that remains fairly true and the presence of their best batsman, Williamson, on 45.

He and Corey Anderson must negotiate an Australian attack led by the bristling James Pattinson (3-29) and the tourists' ability to find reverse swing.

After watching Australia compile 505 in the first innings, New Zealand wicketkeeper BJ Watling reckons the home side could yet dig in for a stay.

"We just got to take it as deep as we can tomorrow and get a target that we can win the game of cricket.

"They've obviously got the ball to swing a bit and that'll be the biggest challenge in the morning, to get us through that period."

Australian batsman Adam Voges says the classy Williamson will be in his team's cross hairs.

"It's always a big wicket for us.

"The plan is to try and keep him as dry as possible and limit his scoring options. We have done that quite well and had a bit of success in doing that."

A forecast for showers during the day might otherwise have been welcomed by the hosts but they need to push for a win if they are to square the series 1-1.
