A year ago, Victoria was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires, which raged across the state, wiping whole towns off the map and killing 173 people.

To mark the anniversary, those who lived through the terrifying fires of February 7, 2009, tell SBS about their experiences.

Click on our interactive Google map to hear and see them talk about what happened to them during the disaster, and how they've coped in the months since.

Red fire icons show where the major blazes of Black Saturday occurred. Click on each one for details of how big the blaze was, and how many people were caught up in it.

Yellow markers feature video interviews with the people of Marysville, Kinglake and Callignee talking about their attempts to deal with the disaster.

Green markers include links to stories on the World News Australia website - interviews, news and analysis linked to the anniversary of the fires.

Blue markers feature links to audio interviews with the survivors of Black Saturday, in which they describe the events of that day, and their efforts to recover from their ordeals.

Purple markers show photogalleries of pictures taken both in the immediate aftermath of the fires, and over the year that has passed since then.

Pink markers are links to archive content from the World News Australia website in the days after the bushfires.
