Blackmores is promoting from within to replace Australia Post-bound Christine Holgate, making Richard Henfrey its new chief executive.

Mr Henfrey, who has been with Blackmores since 2009 and chief operating officer for the past three years, will take charge with immediate effect.

Chairman Stephen Chapman said Mr Henfrey had shown integrity, leadership and strong strategic and financial acumen during a period in which rapid growth at home and in Asia sent had the company's market valuation soaring.

"Richard has been at the forefront of Blackmores' strategy development for more than eight years and has driven key business projects that positioned us well for the transformation of our business over that time," Mr Chapman said.

Investors welcomed the news, lifting Blackmores shares by $3.74, or 4.3 per cent, to $90.99.

Mr Henfrey said he had seen the business grow during his time with the company, and looked forward to steering it further.

"My focus in taking on this role is to continue to expand our operations, invest in product development, extend our research and education capabilities and to showcase Australian health innovation on a world stage," he said.

Ms Holgate led Blackmores for nine years but was poached by Australia Post to replace Ahmed Fahour.

Her move was announced in June and she was prepared to stay until September 29 while Blackmores looked internally and externally for a successor.

Blackmores will announce its full year financial results on August 29.
