Blanchett suffers Tony Award snub

Kate Blanchett has failed to win a Tony Award at an awards ceremony in New York.

Cate Blanchett has been bypassed for a Tony Award for her debut Broadway performance of the Sydney Theatre Company's production of The Present.

Laurie Metcalf for A Doll's House, Part 2 won the best actress in a leading role in a play Tony at Sunday's ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The other nominees were Sally Field (The Glass Menagerie), Laura Linney (Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes) and Jennifer Ehle (Oslo).

Earlier in the ceremony fellow Aussie Tim Minchin missed out on the original score Tony for Groundhog Day.
