Eight more rivers on Queensland's Cape York Peninsula will be declared Wild Rivers under a re-elected Labor government.
Premier Anna Bligh has made the announcement during an early morning barramundi fishing trip today on the Chapman River on the Cape's west coast.
Under the legislation, any development that impacts with the flow of the river will be banned however grazing, tourism and fishing are still allowed.
The Watson, Coleman, and Olive-Pascoe river basins will be the next three systems to become Wild Rivers, bringing the total in the state to 16.
Ms Bligh also nominated the next five river basins which would be protected - the Jeannie, Jacky Jacky, Ducie, Jardine and Holroyd basins.
