Blistering heat bakes outback NSW

Western Sydney and the state's northwest are experiencing high temperatures above 40C again with no cool change forecast for at least a week.

Scorching temperatures have baked much of NSW again but the mercury is not expected to drop to average January temperatures for at least a week.

The hottest place in NSW on Monday was Wilcannia in the state's northwest, which reached a blistering 46.4C while Penrith residents in western Sydney sweated through a top of 43.2C.

There's no big relief in sight, with temperatures expected to reach 43C at Wilcannia on Tuesday and 45C in the state's west, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Western Sydney will experience some relief with temperatures forecast to remain below 40C at 38C on Tuesday.

"There's no great cooling trend that we're expecting," meteorologist Jordan Notara told AAP on Monday.

"There's nothing to see temperatures drop to the averages for January."

The mercury is forecast to remain at or above 40C for much of NSW for the rest of the week.

Firefighters are keeping a close eye on bushfires across NSW with two regions - the Southern Ranges and Southern Slopes - subject to total fire bans on Tuesday.

NSW Police has reminded motorists it's not only an offence for children or pets to be left unattended in a vehicle, but it can be deadly.

The warning follows an incident in Sydney's west on Monday where a 16-month-old boy was locked in a car for about 45 minutes.

Police pulled the distressed boy from the car in Merrylands West about 3.40pm and have spoken to his parents.
