Residents of Western Australia's north are preparing for another potential cyclone, with the alert warning rising and flooding impacting the region.

A blue alert is in place for people in or near the coastal communities of Cape Leveque and Port Hedland, including Dampier Peninsula, Broome, Bidyadanga, Sandfire, Wallal, Pardoo, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Wedgefield and surrounding areas.

A blue alert issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services means people should prepare for dangerous weather. SES volunteers are on standby.

Residents have been warned to secure or remove loose material from around homes and ensure emergency kits are complete.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said a tropical low was estimated to be 60 kilometres east of Derby and 215km east-northeast of Broome at 2pm (WST) on Sunday, moving west-southwest at 14km/h.

The low is moving towards the Kimberley, bringing heavy rainfall and periods of strong squally winds.

The BoM says the system is likely to track close to the west Kimberley coast and Eighty Mile Beach area on Monday, and there is potential for it to move over open water.

"If the low spends enough time over open water, it will develop into a tropical cyclone," the BoM said.

From Tuesday, the system is likely to go over land in the east Pilbara and move towards the south, further inland.

Gales with gusts to 100km/h may develop between Cape Leveque and Wallal during Monday if the low develops into a tropical cyclone, and then later extend down towards Port Hedland, the BoM said.
