Blues hold on to first AFL draft pick

Many AFL picks were traded during a busy AFL trade window but Carlton was never going to exchange the highly-coveted first selection in November's draft.

Carlton will bring a fourth No.1 draft pick to the club after holding on to the coveted selection through the AFL trade window.

Top defensive prospect Jacob Weitering is likely to join Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer as top draft picks at the Blues at the November 24 national draft.

Brisbane have pick No.2, while Melbourne improved to hold pick No.3 after trading with Gold Coast during the trade period.

Essendon's trade of Jake Carlisle to St Kilda means the Bombers have picks No.4 and No.5.

Gold Coast have pick No.6 with the Demons re-entering the draft at pick No.7, making good on the club's goal to have two top-10 draft selections during their rebuilding phase under Paul Roos.

For the first time in nine years, Hawthorn have two first-round draft picks, gaining pick No.15 in a trade with North Melbourne to go with No.18.

The most well-travelled pick is No.28, which began life with Geelong and was traded to Adelaide to Carlton to GWS to Collingwood before settling with North Melbourne.

Just seven selections in the top 30 choices stood still - including picks No.1, No.2 and No.4 - during a tumultuous trade window, the first to feature a points-based system for the selection of academy and father-son selections.

Under the new system, clubs must match points values for highly-rated youngsters.

The result was many non-Victorian clubs jockeying to secure lower draft picks to grow their points base and secure their home-grown products.

Geelong will be the last mover in the draft, making their first selection with pick No.67.
