Why wait until the end of the NRL season?

That's the challenge NSW captain Paul Gallen has laid out for Queensland prop Josh McGuire ahead of the Blues' must-win State of Origin II on Wednesday night.

His comments came after media reports revealed organisers had reached out to both players' camps about a charity boxing bout in December.

"Let's not wait until the end of the year. Put a ring out there Wednesday night and we can warm up with it," Gallen said.

Gallen is undefeated in three professional fights, including his most recent bout with the New Zealand Warriors' Bodene Thompson in November.

He said he was open to McGuire being the fourth.

"I've got nothing against Josh McGuire whatsoever. I've actually met his family out there, his family are NSW supporters and are great people," Gallen said.

"But I've no hesitation to jump in a boxing ring with him anywhere or any time."

However it is believed McGuire will need to get a clearance from the Brisbane Broncos before he steps into the ring.

Both players are likely to be in contention to play for Australia in the Four Nations tournament at the end of the year.
