Bluescope to take $6.8m hit from US fire

Bluescope Steel says it will take a $US5 million ($A6.8 million) hit from damages and lost production following a fire at its North Star plant in the US.

The steelmaker said on Monday a refractory failure at the weekend allowed molten steel to escape, causing an explosion and fire at plant in Delta, Ohio.

The company says it is still assessing the damage but that it currently expects lost production of approximately 35,000 metric tonnes.
