Almost 150 suspected asylum seekers have been taken to Christmas Island after being stopped off Australia's north-west coast.

Almost 150 suspected asylum seekers have been taken to Christmas Island after being stopped off Australia's north-west coast.

The boat was intercepted by a border control vessel on Thursday morning, north of the Ashmore Islands, Australian Customs and Border Protection said.

The 145 people on board will undergo the usual security, identity and health checks once at Christmas Island.
