The Australian Greens are threatening to recall border protection officials to a Senate hearing, describing their first appearance as a farce.

Operation Sovereign Borders commander Angus Campbell and immigration department officials appeared at an estimates hearing in Canberra on Tuesday.

But Lieutenant General Campbell was limited in his response to questions because of the government's strategy to provide information at a weekly media briefing only.

"The process of that committee was pretty much a farce," Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young told reporters on Wednesday.

The Greens will consider asking the Senate's legal and constitutional affairs committee to recall General Campbell and other officials.
