A historic week in cricket would not be complete without former prime minister Bob Hawke skolling a beer at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

So that's exactly what he did.

Mr Hawke, who turned 87 last month, downed the amber fluid on Wednesday during day two of the second Test between Australia and Pakistan.

He made the Guinness Book of Records in the early 1950s for downing a yard glass of beer in 11 seconds while a student at Oxford University.

"This feat was to endear me to some of my fellow Australians more than anything else I ever achieved," he recalled in his 1994 autobiography, The Hawke Memoirs.

And he endeared himself again on Wednesday.

NSW cricketer Trent Copeland tweeted: "Bob Hawke just sank a full beer on the big screen at the SCG. Legend #AUSvPAK".

"Bob Hawke skulling a beer to the cheers of the SCG crowd including Captain Smith & Boof... PRICELESS!!" Ali Taylor tweeted.

It's become a regular feature of Mr Hawke's visits to the cricket.

He necked a beer to cries from the crowd of "One for the country, Robert!" when Australia played India at the SCG in 2012 and again at the Ashes Test in 2014.
