Body of boy sighted in water off NSW coast

The body of a teenage boy who was swept out to sea will be retrieved by emergency crews off a beach at Port Macquarie in NSW.

The retrieval operation for the body of a teenage boy who got into difficulty in rough surf off Port Macquarie on the NSW mid-north coast has resumed.

The 14-year-old local, named in the media as Bronson Rhodes, was swimming with two mates at Flynns Beach on Saturday afternoon when the trio got into difficulty and signalled for help.

Two of the boys were rescued but Bronson was unable to be saved.

His body was sighted by emergency services on Saturday but the retrieval operation had to be called off due to the treacherous surf conditions, police said.

The search continued on Sunday but there has been no sign of the teen.

Search crews recommenced the search on Monday morning, with police, marine rescue, surf lifesaving and a rescue helicopter all involved in the operation.

Flynns Beach remains closed.

It comes less than two weeks after an 11-year-old ACT boy was caught in a rip in rough conditions at the nearby unpatrolled Lighthouse Beach.

The boy's mother could only watch as her son, who was waist-deep in water, was sucked into the surf on December 6 while his 17-year-old brother tried to rescue him.

The 11-year-old's body hasn't been recovered.

Further north on the NSW coast, a 49-year-old British woman died after being pulled from the surf at Coffs Harbour on Sunday evening.
