Body of Sydney kayaker located in Qld

Authorities have located the body of a kayaker who went over a waterfall in a national park in far north Queensland.

A Sydney kayaker has died after being caught in rocks when he paddled over a waterfall in far north Queensland.

The 37-year-old man was kayaking with four friends on the North Johnson River in the Wooroonooran National Park near Malanda when he went over the drop on Thursday and became trapped.

He was stuck in his kayak in an air pocket but was pinned to the rock as water surged over him in the isolated section of rapids which is accessible only by river or air.

Emergency services personnel were dropped to their location for the night and returned to Mandala on Friday morning as crews began searching for the man.

His body was found as the afternoon light was fading on Friday.

Police said they knew he was in an air pocket but couldn't communicate with him and had no idea of his condition.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services area controller Inspector Shane Jarvis had also said rescuers were hampered by poor visibility.
