Bogus NSW doctor 'flees to India'

A police task force has been set up to find NSW's alleged fake doctor amid reports he has been found hiding in India.

A man caught allegedly masquerading as a doctor in NSW hospitals for more than a decade has reportedly been tracked down hiding in India.

NSW Police would not confirm the reports but said a special task force had been set up to find the supposed fake doctor.

Shyam Acharya went on the run days before he was due to face court last week over allegations he gained medical registration, was recruited and gained employment in four NSW hospitals using fake documents.

He's since been found in India, the Seven Network reported on Tuesday.

The State Crime Command had established Strike Force Mandine to handle the investigation, including locating Mr Acharya, a police spokeswoman told AAP.

The Indian national is said to have posed as UK doctor Sarang Chitale by entering Australia on a fake passport in 2003 and gaining registration with the Medical Board of NSW.

He worked in hospitals at Manly, Hornsby, Gosford and Wyong until 2014 while the real doctor practised as a specialist in the UK.

NSW Health has launched an independent review into how authorities allowed and also failed to pick up the alleged masquerade for 11 years.

Mr Acharya is facing a $30,000 penalty and court proceedings following charges laid by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority.
