The Times of India tweeted a photo of the actress with a link to an online slideshow and caption that read: "OMG: Deepika Padukone's cleavage show".
The actress responded angrily, saying: "Yes! I am a woman and I have breasts and cleavage! You got a problem?"
The newspaper later deleted the original tweet, and said the initial post was meant to be seen as a 'compliment'.
“You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew! :),” the newspaper tweeted.
The tweets triggered a tidal wave of backlash against the Times of India and fans rushed to defend of the star.
The hashtag #IStandWithDeepikaPadukone started trending in India, with many supporters slamming the organisation for posting the tweet.
Deepika Padukone is one of India's most successful models and actresses, shooting to fame in 2007 with her Bollywood debut in Om Shanti Om, where she was cast opposite Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan.
